What is the Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional funding provided to schools to support pupils who may experience disadvantage and to help improve their educational outcomes.
Schools receive Pupil Premium funding based on eligible pupils who are recorded as receiving, or who have previously been eligible for, targeted free school meals, as well as eligible children who have previously been in local authority care.
Pupil Premium is not an individual payment for a particular child. Schools use the funding to support pupils’ education, progress, wellbeing and access to opportunities, based on their identified needs.
Bridgetown Primary School Pupil Premium Strategy
Our Pupil Premium Strategy sets out how we use this funding to support pupils and remove barriers to learning.
Our current strategy covers the 2025–2028 period and is reviewed and adapted annually.
Our priorities include:
Improving outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics.
Reducing gaps in learning.
Developing pupils’ academic confidence.
Improving access to enrichment opportunities.
Supporting pupils with additional needs and concentration.
Improving attendance and engagement.
Supporting pupils’ wellbeing and addressing wider barriers to learning.
We use a combination of high-quality teaching, targeted academic support and wider strategies to ensure that Pupil Premium funding has a positive impact on pupils’ learning and development.
Could your child be eligible?
If your child is eligible for benefits-related free school meals, it is important to apply even if they are already receiving a free school meal through the universal infant free school meals scheme in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2.
Registering eligibility can help the school access additional funding to support children’s learning and wider opportunities.

How we use Pupil Premium funding
At Bridgetown Primary School, we use our Pupil Premium funding to address barriers that may affect pupils’ progress, attainment, attendance, engagement and wellbeing.
Our approach includes:
High-quality teaching
We invest in developing staff knowledge and teaching practice so that pupils receive effective, evidence-informed teaching and support.
Targeted academic support
Where appropriate, pupils may receive additional support such as:
Phonics
Reading
Vocabulary development
Mathematics
Speech and language support
Targeted intervention
Additional opportunities to practise and consolidate learning
Wider strategies
We also use funding to support:
Nurture and wellbeing
Attendance
Access to enrichment and extracurricular opportunities
Early identification of barriers
Pupils’ confidence, engagement and participation
Our provision is reviewed regularly to consider its impact and to ensure that support responds to pupils’ needs.
