What's Going On in Reception?
W.C 7th April
As we near the end of term, the children in Reception have enjoyed planting and growing beans. Last week they all took turns to plant their own bean inspired by the Jack and the Beanstalk story. We've enjoyed watching them grow so tall (although not quite tall enough to climb!) and wrote some instructions for Mr Tyler to show him how he could plant his own beanstalk.
The children will be bringing home their beanstalks at the end of the week.
W.C 17th March
Children have had fun playing doctors and patients. The home corner has enhanced into a surgery and we've been over run with injuries, pregnancies and limbs falling off! Thankfully, we've had so many Robin and Sparrow doctors and nurses to care for our poorly patients who received bandages, had their temperature taken and received high quality care!
w/c 3rd March 2025
What a very busy time in Reception!
The children loved their first World Book Day at Bridgetown Primary School - we were so impressed with all their amazing costumes. The children enjoyed a day of reading lots of books with the adults in their class and did some activities around the Tom Percival book 'The Bridge'.
Earlier in the week, we did some pancake flipping for pancake day and then the children enjoyed putting toppings on pancakes and eating them.
And finally, in provision, the children had the opportunity to practise their threading skills in order to make a bead bracelet.
What an exciting week!
W/C 10th February 2025
This week was online safety week. We learnt what to do if we ever see a pop up on the screen we're using. We learnt the phrase: 'Stop, Close and Tell' so that we don't click on something we shouldn't and so that adults can help us be safe on the internet.
In English we've read The Storm Whale, enjoying thinking about how we would look after the whale. In maths, we've looked at longer and shorter. We used play dough to create long and short lengths and place them in order from shortest to longest.
The children have really taken off with their play too. In provision they've been master engineers making millions of paper aeroplanes, testing and refining their design to make really aerodynamic models.
w/c 20th January
Kung Hei Fat Choi! This week, we have been learning the story of the Jade Emperor and the Animals. We learnt how the animals all competed in a race to take their place on the zodiac calendar. In Drawing Club we drew our own emperors and thought of different ways the animals could've crossed the river.
We were impressed by all the children in their space class assembly this week. In provision the children are enjoying playing with space toys and have been busy in the outdoor area creating rockets out of crates!
W/C 13th January
The children have enjoyed being back in school and the frosty weather. Some of us brave the outside and explored the garden area. We went on an ice hunt and found a crystal clear layer of ice in a tuff tray. We explored how it felt, looked, how it was formed and what will happen to it. Then, great fun was had smashing the ice!
The children have also really begun to develop as a cohort, looking after each other in reading stories when friends are feeling sad, putting a blanket on classmates when they are tired and being so kind and caring.
Well done Robins and Sparrows!

W/C 16th December
In Reception we are fully getting into the swing of Christmas since our amazing Nativity Song Concert last week! We have been enjoying 'snow' in the Christmas Curiosity Corner, dressing up as elves and making hats for Christmas lunch on Thursday. What a wonderful festive week!
W/C 2nd December
Reception enjoyed a author visit from Bethan Sennett and a drama workshop around her book 'Don't Eat Me!'. The children loved acting out the different characters in the story such as Lemmy Lizard and Sally Snake.
We also have really got into our junk modelling and loved playing and mark making with large boxes as you can see! It's helped strengthen our fine motor skills and our role playing.
W/C 19th November
As part of our work on 'People Who Help Us' we had a visitor in Reception. Dom, a police officer from Warwickshire Police came to see us. He told us about what police do, wear, how they help people, what uniform they wear including hats which some of us got to try on. He even bought his police car in for us to see! We got to look at the different lights and listen to the sirens - it was really loud but fun!
We have also had the police fancy dress out in the role play area so we can act out being police officers during provision.
w/c 4th November 2024
We have enjoyed listening to the story of Rama and Sita in celebration of Diwali. We made Rangoli tiles out of clay and drew a picture of our multi headed monster, like Ravana in the story.
In maths we explored 3D shapes, finding out whether they roll or slide. In the outdoors area, it was great fun to send 3D shapes down some guttering to test out whether they would roll down.
This was also our first week in Forest School. The children thought it was brilliant to play in the mud kitchen and learn how to stay safe in a natural environment.
Week 5:
The children enjoyed taking part in a Street Dance workshop last week. They were grooving to some funky songs with the dance teacher Olivia and even learned a short routine!
This week, we've started painting in the craft areas in the classroom and expressing our inner artists! The children have painted rainbows, people and experimented with mixing colours.
Week 3 20.09.24
This week the children have discovered the Colour Monsters! We've read the book Colour Monsters by Anna Llenas about a monster who changes colour to show his different emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, calm, love and anger. Each child has a small picture of their face which they place on the colour monster to match how they feel.
The children are playing beautifully together, this week they've enjoyed playing 'floor is lava' and creating colour monster collages together.
On Thursday 19th October, Louise from the Road Safety Team at Warwickshire visited our Reception classes to introduce them to Warwick Bear. He has very important messages about how to keep safe when using a bike or scooter, or walking around the roads. We know to think, stop, look, listen and hold hands to keep us safe.
